Diwali - The Festival of Lights

  • Diwali - The Festival of Lights

Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn either in October or November each year, depending on the cycle of the moon. This year Diwali will be celebrated on 23rd October 2014.

The festival of light spiritually signifies light conquering darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.

Traditionally, Hindu’s will join together with friends and family for prayers followed by a spectacular fireworks display, and then gather inside for a feast and exchange of gifts.

Before Diwali everyone must clean, renovate and decorate their home, dress in their finest outfits and illuminate their homes with Diyas, oil burning lamps and lanterns along with candles; this is to help the goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, find her way into the home. For a safer, child friendly option to oil burning Diyas why not decorate the home with our paper hanging lanterns and use our LED Buttonlites to illuminate them.

Use our vibrant, regal toned hanging lanterns to add a wealth of colour. Alternatively you could keep your colours more traditional and neutral with soft, warm lanterns such as ivory, yellow and gold but let your children experiment with colour in their bedrooms to express their individual personalities but also to reflect the brighter tones connected with traditional Indian celebrations such as red, fuchsia, turquoise, orange, and purple.
